How to stop procrastinating on big goals

Okay, here's your article: I used to be a master procrastinator. Big goals? Forget about it. They loomed over me like giant, scary mountains, and I’d happily find a million other things to do rather than even think about climbing them. I'd clean the house, binge-watch shows, anything to avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed.

My dream of writing a novel was constantly pushed aside, replaced with "urgent" tasks like organizing my sock drawer. The turning point came when I realized years were slipping by, and I hadn't even written a single chapter. I knew something had to change. The first thing I did was break down that enormous goal into tiny, manageable pieces. Instead of "write a novel," it became "write 500 words today." That felt less daunting, almost achievable.

I started using a timer. Twenty-five minutes of focused writing, followed by a five-minute break. The Pomodoro Technique, they call it. It actually worked! Knowing I only had to concentrate for a short burst made it easier to start. I also learned to identify my procrastination triggers. Was it fear of failure? Perfectionism? Usually, it was a combination of both.

I realized I was afraid my writing wouldn't be good enough, so I wouldn't even start. To combat this, I gave myself permission to write badly. Seriously. The first draft could be terrible, awful even, as long as I got the words down. I could always edit later. Another game-changer was finding an accountability partner. A friend who also had a big goal.

We'd check in with each other regularly, sharing our progress and offering encouragement. Knowing someone else was relying on me, even just for moral support, helped me stay on track. We celebrated small victories together, like finishing a chapter or reaching a word count milestone. Creating a dedicated workspace was also crucial. A place free from distractions, where I could focus solely on writing.

For me, it was a corner of my living room, but it could be anything. A coffee shop, a library, even a park bench. The key is to associate that space with working on your goal. And finally, I learned to be kind to myself. There would be days when I slipped up and procrastinated. That's okay. The important thing is to acknowledge it, forgive yourself, and get back on track the next day.

Procrastination is a habit, and habits take time to break. It's not about perfection, it’s about progress. Now, I'm much better at tackling those big goals, one small step at a time. The novel is still a work in progress, but at least I'm writing! And that's a huge victory in itself.
